What is artificial intelligence and how might it affect our lives?

Perhaps you're already familiar with the term artificial intelligence (AI), or perhaps you've managed to steer clear of all the discussions surrounding it. Regardless let’s begin by providing some context.

Artificial Intelligence refers to the ability of machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, perception, decision-making, and natural language processing. AI involves the development of computer algorithms that can analyse large amounts of data, identify patterns and relationship, and make predictions or decisions based on analysis.

AI technologies can be applied across a wide range of fields, from healthcare and finance to transportation and manufacturing, and have the potential to greatly enhance efficiency and productivity in various industries.

That sounds great, doesn’t it?

On March 22nd, over 1,800 individuals – among them Elon Must, cognitive scientist Gary Marcus, and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak requested a six-month halt on the creation of systems that surpass the capabilities of GPT-4.

What is GPT and OpenAI?

GPT stands for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer" and refers specifically to a type of language model that has been developed by OpenAI.

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research laboratory consisting of a team of engineers and researchers who are dedicated to advancing the development of AI in a safe and beneficial way.

The organisation was founded in December 2015 by a group of prominent figures in the technology industry, including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, and Wojciech Zaremba.

OpenAI's mission is to create and promote AI that benefits humanity as a whole, while also mitigating the potential risks and challenges that may arise from the development of this powerful technology.

OpenAI has made significant contributions to the field of AI, including the development of advanced language models such as GPT-3.

So what might have spurred this sudden concern from these individuals who have been heavily involved in AI development?

One possibility is the recognition of the potential dangers that come with developing systems that exceed the capabilities of GPT-4, particularly in the areas of bias, safety, and ethics. Another factor could be the growing public awareness of AI and its impact on society, which has resulted in increased scrutiny and calls for accountability from tech companies and developers. Additionally, recent advances in AI technology may have prompted these individuals to reconsider the potential consequences of unbridled development.

There are many potential positive impacts of AI on our lives, including:

  • Increased efficiency: AI can automate many tasks and processes, which can save time and increase productivity in many industries.

  • Improved healthcare: AI can be used to analyse medical data and assist in diagnosing illnesses, as well as identifying potential drug interactions and side effects.

  • More personalized experiences: AI can be used to personalize experiences for individuals, such as in the case of targeted advertising or recommendations based on past behaviour.

However, there are also potential negative impacts of AI, including:

  • Job displacement: AI has the potential to automate many jobs, which could lead to job displacement and economic disruption.

  • Bias and discrimination: AI algorithms may inadvertently perpetuate biases and discrimination present in the data used to train them.

  • Privacy concerns: AI may collect and use personal data in ways that could compromise individual privacy.

  • Security risks: AI systems could be vulnerable to cyber-attacks, which could result in significant harm if the systems are controlling critical infrastructure or sensitive data.
